Sept. 4th, 2024: “How We Learn”

My brain is constantly overworking to process and store information. Frequently, I think very deeply for extended amounts of time because I find myself lost chasing a thought; however, if the neocortex is where memories are stored and kept, mine certainly must be faulty as I often forget very simple things such as where I left my headphones or keys. That may also be a factor in my Top 3 Intelligence scores, as I am often only able to recall information if I have attributed something tangible or natural to it or a feeling. Since among my top scores were naturalist and musical—which I believe is more or less a component of emotional thinking—it makes sense that my memory storing would require natural features or emotions that often are evoked by music. As Carey states, neural networks are what often compose big groups of memories or experiences, which I believe may be what is happening more frequently in my head when I store simple memories such as names inside larger networks that include other factors such as the environment I was in. When I am often caught in presque vu I will mutter phrases to myself to help call me back to when I originally remembered something, as once I can connect something back to an experience I can often recall the entire thing.

Sept. 16th, 2024: Jargon Peer Review Feedback

Group 4, Group 1

Group name:

Jargon Project Group 4 (Rahmeen, Jamie, Daniel, Widelie)

Audience:

Back-up dancers concerned about health

Topic:

TEK vs AEK, and how they intertwine and affect each other in practice.

Questions:

Is either method more insisted upon being used in the scientific community?

Would the two exist without each other, or do the two inherently supply each other with information?

How would this appeal to their chosen audience?:

The presentation appeals to back-up dancers as the two methods—although may be used more often in agriculture or survival—can certainly be applied to rehabilitation and healing. Since the presentation was very focused on deeply explaining TEK and AEK, when it was tied back into the audience it was concise and on topic.

Glow:

The group had very thorough explanations of everything mentioned in the presentation, which made sure I didn’t fall of track. I appreciated the way each member talked without needing to read off the screen when conveying information, as it made each speaker seem very professional.

Grow:

Use of complex words during a presentation does make it difficult to follow, so perhaps lessening the expectation that the audience understands everything makes a presentation more understandable.

Group name:

Jargon Project Group 1

Audience:

High-school students volunteering at a hospital

Topic:

How nanoparticles used in cancer treatment

Questions:

Are there any other ways nanoparticles may enter the cell?

Since the treatment is very new, is there any potential danger in using this treatment on more complex organisms like humans?

How would this appeal to their chosen audience?:

The nature of the scientific article is necessarily beneficial to students volunteering at a hospital as they are likely interested in such medical studies already.  New research is very beneficial to introduce to students looking to enter the field, and so the group did well in appealing to the target audience.

Glow:

Even with the slide text malfunctioning, I was still focused throughout the entire presentation, which speaks a lot to the presenters. I appreciated how everybody in the group understood the entirety of the article, and could convey that through smooth transitions between ideas and speakers.

Grow:

Less time going into processes that are already on the slides gives a lot more to a presentation than what feels like fluff, but otherwise the presentation was very well conducted.

October 7th, 2024: Science in the Movies Peer Feedback

roup name: 4

Movie: Mitchells vs. Machines

Theme/Topic: AI interactions and impacts with human development

Glow: The group did not read off the slides, and instead faced the audience when speaking and spoke from memory or brief notecards they had.

Grow: The presentation felt as though some topics could gave been touched deeper on, like the conflicts caused by AI.

Questions: Is AI currently causing more harm than good? Can the development of AI be stopped or stagnated or is it inevitable to be integrated into society?

Group name: 5

Movie: The Martian

Theme/Topic: The feasibility of human survival on Mars

Glow: The presentation followed an easily understandable introduction then exploration into each method in the movie.

Grow: The time given to each part varied quite a bit with some parts being explained more thoroughly than others.

Questions: Is Mars overall a reasonable prospect for future human living?

Group name: 1

Movie: LUCY

Theme/Topic: Advancing the use of the brain and the capabilities of people’s minds

Glow: Time efficient and summarized each part of the movie equally. It didn’t feel as if one part was explained more than any other.

Grow: Some of the language used while presenting seemed

Questions: If we already use the majority of our brains then what do we predict will come as humans development?

Group name: 3

Show: Altered Carbon

Theme/Topic: Distinction between consciousness and physical bodies and the morality of biotechnology.

Glow: The show was analyzed fully and each theme of the movie was highlighted and discussed throughout the presentation.

Grow: The scientific methods in the show could have been more touched on, and although the sciences weren’t touched on in the show, the presentation could have been speculated on.

Questions: What parts of the the show showed how we would reach the point in society depicted?
